Talk title: The Best-Kept Secret Beneath Our Feet: Why a Geoscience Career Rocks

Geoscience is often called a “discovery degree” because many students first encounter it by chance—taking an introductory course to fulfill a science requirement and unexpectedly finding a passion for Earth’s systems, resources, and processes. But despite this spark, geoscience remains one of the best-kept career secrets, and with shrinking enrollments and academic programs being shuttered, the profession faces a critical challenge in sustaining its future. Therefore, this presentation highlights how geoscientists solve real-world problems, featuring examples from my career in Michigan, and underscores why now is the time to tell the story of geoscience and its vital role in addressing today’s challenges.
